What are Landfills?
|
Landfills are defined according to the Merriam-Webster as "a system of trash and garbage disposal in which the waste is buried between layers of earth to build up low-lying land". The purpose behind a landfill is to dispose of trash and other various unwanted items. These items are non-recyclable and therefore have no place to go other than the ground. This is an unfortunate reality that is a growing issue today. We try to recycle as much as possible but there are still many items that when they have lived out their life cycle are just disposed of in a landfill.
When one landfill is full, another is created. The modern landfill has followed this process for awhile now. This is why recycling is so important, otherwise you are just contributing to the creation of landfills worldwide.
